PAVS awards 2023

Dinas Cross Wellbeing Hub has won the PAVS volunteering Awards “group of the year”! Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS) chose the Hub from 16 (very worthy) Pembrokeshire organisations to be awarded 2023 winner.

Warm Space

We have converted Garn Fach into a “Warm Space”, or Snug, to provide a cosy meeting space. This room has its own kitchenette with free tea, coffee and biscuits, with milk in the fridge, to create a “Home from home”. There is a DVD player, radio, USB charging sockets, internet connection, board games, chess and cards. Members of our community are meeting to just chat, watch a film, play cards and learn to play the ukulele, in a warm environment. It is also used by the Welsh conversation group, Merched y Wawr and the gardening group for armchair gardening! It is open for anyone to use on Mondays and Fridays from Monday 13th November 10:00-16:00.

Big breakfast 2024

Well over a hundred full cooked breakfasts were served at a fundraising event for Paul Sartori palliative care charity. The total raised was £1,735.91. In addition to a full cooked breakfast we provided toast and croissants, tea cakes, jam and fruit juices. Thank you for a great turnout and for your generosity.

A new border extends the full length of the garden which includes obelisks and roses.

Gardening club

Would like to acknowledge the financial support of :

Force for Nature Pembrokeshire Coast Trust

McCarthy Stone foundation

These two donations are supporting garden projects around the village.

“The Well” refurbishment

The Wellbeing Hub refurbished the Well next to the Tennis Courts.

Tennis court Orchard

The land beside the tennis court has been left untouched for a long time. It is owned by the Community Council.

With funding from Pembrokeshire Coast Force for Nature, Dinas Wellbeing Hub gardening group were able to plant an orchard of native Welsh apple trees and 400 bulbs including native Welsh daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells. The next stage will be to introduce native hedging. The well site was also tidied and bulbs planted.

NGS

“On Tuesday this week, Jackie and Fran from the county team enjoyed a visit to Yr Hen Ysgol, Dinas Cross to present the gardening group with their plaque for completing works funded by a National Garden Scheme Community Garden grant. We received such a warm welcome and were shown around by Val and some of the team of gardening volunteers who develop and maintain the beautiful garden area at the back of the community centre as well as planters and beds at the front where passers-by can enjoy the colour. They showed us the new plants that had been purchased with the grant, as well as a new picnic bench allowing more people to enjoy time in the garden. The garden is well used by the whole community including a toddler group who meet at the hall and last week was host to a busy Summer fun afternoon where bouncy castle and barbecue were enjoyed alongside the new planting! We left feeling really inspired by their plans for the future including a new veg/edible plant area. Our congratulations to Yr Hen Ysgol, Dinas Cross on being awarded an NGS Community Garden Grant and achieving all that they set out to in their plan.”
